D-Star and GPS Information

It is possible to configure several Icom radios to use GPS data. We have experience of programming the IC-91E and IC-2820 radios to receive data from other GPS equipped radios.

The IC-91E is able to transmit positions using an external GPS receiver connected through the data socket. We assume the IC-92 operates similarly, although it does have a special speaker microphone which has an in-built GPS receiver.

The IC-2820 benefits from an in-built GPS receiver when the Digital Voice module is fitted. An external GPS antenna is provided and connects via a socket behind the front panel.

Just to complicate matters, Icom provide two methods of transmitting APRS data. One is the standard GPS data and the other an Icom modified data stream which includes error correction, called GPS-A. Although the latter is easier to set up, it is now recommended that users use the GPS system by following some specific instructions.

This allows GPS data to be passed to the DPRS server on the IS (Internet Stream) and then to both APRS and DPRS clients. Positions can be viewed online or on the individual radios, using this system. A particularly good site for viewing the results is http://aprs.fi which has a vast amount of information shown.

Information displayed on the radio shows the distance and direction of the transmitting station.

Please view the documents provided as a guide to programming your radios for GPS operation.

PLEASE NOTE : Whilst working through GB7SF we ask that you only send your position when pressing your PTT, in order to limit traffic through the Gateway. Positions sent every few minutes are not welcome.

APRS = Automatic Position Reporting System

DPRS = Digital Position Reporting System

GPS data transmitted to another IC-2820 or capable radio

To transmit your GPS data to another IC-2820 or capable radio you will have to turn on GPS in Set Mode menu as above you then will have to do the follow:

Page 126 of the IC-2820 manual details the setup of the GPS Sentence

GPS Data to APRS via D-PRS iGATE

This was most challenging because of the documentation.

I Transmitting your GPS data with latitude, longitude, course, speed, altitude and a message can only be accomplished by setting these features since GPS-A does not support altitude.
Menu Set Mode (manual page 125) menu 12/14 this is off by default turn it on

Menu DV Set Mode (manual page 127) 03/11 set DV Data TX to PTT

At a minimum to will need to select RMC and GGA this will give you longitude, latitude and altitude, at receiving station.

To transmit the data you will have to select how often you want the information transmitted, I selected on PTT, which means the data will only transmit when you are talking.

Setting this is done in DV Set Mode Menu 3/11 (Icom  manual page 103 and page 127
